Shorthand Digital Library

This Shorthand Digital Library is composed of documents from the Louis A. Leslie Collection of shorthand materials housed at Rider University's Moore Library. Louis A. Leslie wrote many textbooks for John Robert Gregg, and worked intimately with him on the creation of many others. An expert on the art of shorthand, Leslie wrote many of the shorthand plates for these books. The Louis A. Leslie Collection consists of approximately 7000 monographs, pamphlets, serials and ephemera that detail shorthand teaching methods employed by system creators and schools devoted to the secretarial arts. The collection spans the years from 1685 to 1987.

Within these pages, you will find items that address the history and development of shorthand in England and the United States. Both John Robert Gregg's and Isaac Pitman's contributions to the art are illustrated as are examples of other, lesser known shorthand system creators. Through the generosity of McGraw-Hill, we have included more modern examples of shorthand instruction. These are in addition to the earlier instruction manuals often self-published by their authors. The largest publishing houses of shorthand materials in the early to mid-20th century were the Gregg Publishing Company of New York and Chicago in the United States and Fred and Isaac Pitman and later, Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd of London, Bath, Melbourne and New York.

Through the development of this digital library we hope to give the viewer insight to an almost forgotten skill that was integral to the growth of information and industry from the 19th to 20th centuries. This digital library is made possible through the generosity of The New York Community Trust's John Robert Gregg Fund.
